Book of Power system protection
Power system protection is the use of devices and systems to detect and isolate faults in electrical power systems. The primary goal of power system protection is to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the power system by preventing damage to equipment, minimizing interruptions to power supply, and protecting the safety of personnel.
The main components of power system protection include protective relays, circuit breakers, fuses, and surge arresters. Protective relays are used to detect abnormal operating conditions and send signals to activate protective devices. Circuit breakers are used to interrupt the flow of electrical current in the event of a fault. Fuses and surge arresters are used to protect equipment from high voltage surges.
Power system protection is typically divided into two main categories: primary protection and backup protection. Primary protection refers to the protection devices that are closest to the fault and are responsible for detecting and isolating the fault. Backup protection refers to the protection devices that provide additional protection in case the primary protection devices fail to operate.
Power system protection is a critical component of the electric power system. Without adequate protection, power system failures can result in blackouts, equipment damage, and even electrical fires. As such, power system protection is subject to rigorous testing and maintenance to ensure its effectiveness and reliability.
